Dudley Kingswinford 10’s Tournament - 19th April 2009

Eccleshall entered this tournament as one of the top seeds with a good season of fifteen a side rugby behind them. The tournament was to be played on a fine sunny day with teams from all over the Midlands entering.

The group draw favoured Eccleshall who had to defeat Chaddersley Corbett and Aston Old Edwardians to make it to the final stages.

A steady start against Chaddersley saw Eccleshall take a fourteen point lead into half time and with the pack dominating up front and the backs working well together it was not long before the opposition were further behind and it had become a one horse race Eccleshall running out eventual winners 28-0.

The second group match was a little tougher, Aston Old Ed’s fly half and centre had worked well together in their previous game but The Eccleshall backs, ably assisted by the forwards where necessary negated these two talented players and the opposition were left with nothing to offer. Another great all round performance by Eccleshall saw them run out winners by three tries to nil.

Eccleshall then had a short rest before facing Stourbridge in the semi-final and with either a place in the cup or plate final beckoning this was a must win game. From the start Eccleshall showed their superiority with a solid performance in defence but it was their ability to keep punching through the centre of the pitch and recycle quick ball which earned them the nickname ‘the steamrollers’ amongst the other sides watching. Another victory without conceding a point meant that Eccleshall were now deserved favourites and with Aston producing a shock to beat Worcester a rematch of the earlier pool game was on.

Unfortunately for Aston they were facing a determined Eccleshall side that were now well into their stride and crossed the line for the first time within the first minute of the match. With the final being ten minutes each way it soon became apparent that the superior skill and fitness of the Eccleshall Ladies was going to secure victory. However it still required guts and determination to keep out the threatening Aston backs and once again Eccleshall's defence was exemplary although for the first time in four matches the opposition were able to break through and Eccleshall conceded their only try of the tournament. Not to be outdone though they were to score one of their best tries of the day with the games last play, the ball having gone through nearly every set of hands following a well won line out.

This report deliberately contains no names as this tournament was won through the efforts of the whole squad with every player having moments that deserve a mention. Congratulations go to the whole team from all those watching and from the chairman and president of the club down. A great day and a great performance.
